Your Journey to Becoming a Driving Instructor

Becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) is a rewarding journey that requires dedication, skill, and a passion for helping others. Once you have successfully passed Stage 1 (the advanced theory and hazard perception test), it is time to get behind the wheel.

The next steps—Stage 2 and Stage 3—are designed to transform you from an everyday driver into an expert road user and a highly effective educator. Here is a detailed look at what to expect during your practical training with us.

Stage 2: Advanced Driving Ability (ADI Part 2)

Stage 2: Mastering Advanced Driving Ability (ADI Part 2)

Even if you have been driving safely for years, teaching others requires your own driving skills to be absolutely flawless. The Stage 2 exam is an advanced practical driving test that assesses your ability to drive to a highly professional, DVSA-approved standard.

During your Stage 2 training, our experienced trainers will ride alongside you to help identify and iron out any “bad habits” you may have naturally picked up over the years. We focus on elevating your driving so that you can become the perfect role model for your future learners.

What we cover in Stage 2 training:

  • Expert Vehicle Control: Perfecting your use of the clutch, gears, steering, and brakes to ensure a consistently smooth and safe ride.

  • Advanced Road Reading: Enhancing your anticipation and planning skills, allowing you to read complex traffic situations well before they develop.

  • Eco-Safe Driving: Learning how to drive in a way that minimizes fuel consumption and wear-and-tear on the vehicle.

  • Manoeuvres & Navigation: Executing flawless reversing manoeuvres and demonstrating independent driving using a sat-nav or road signs.

The Stage 2 test requires a very high standard—you are allowed a maximum of only six minor driving faults. Our goal is to ensure you walk into that test center brimming with confidence, possessing a level of skill that goes far beyond the standard UK driving test.

Stage 3: The Art of Teaching (ADI Part 3)

Being an exceptional driver is only the first half of the equation; Stage 3 is where you learn how to become an exceptional teacher. This final, crucial stage is all about developing your instructional ability and mastering the DVSA’s core competencies: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching strategies.

In Stage 3, the focus shifts entirely from your driving to your coaching. We will teach you how to break down complex driving tasks into simple, easy-to-understand steps for complete beginners, as well as how to correct mistakes constructively.

What we cover in Stage 3 training:

  • Client-Centered Learning: Learning how to adapt your teaching style to suit different personalities, learning speeds, and anxiety levels. No two learners are the same!

  • Risk Management: Developing the crucial skill of keeping the car, the learner, and the public safe at all times, including when and how to use dual controls.

  • Lesson Planning: Structuring engaging, progressive lessons that help students reach their goals efficiently while building their confidence.

The Trainee License (PDI Badge) One of the most exciting parts of Stage 3 is the opportunity to apply for your Potential Driving Instructor (PDI) “pink badge.” This trainee license allows you to legally teach real learner drivers for up to six months before taking your final exam. It is an incredible way to earn an income while gaining vital, real-world teaching experience. We will fully support and mentor you throughout this PDI phase so you are perfectly prepared to ace your final Part 3 assessment and earn your fully qualified green badge!
